Martinsville, VA Arts & Culture Plan

The Martinsville Arts & Culture Plan was developed to help the City understand how arts and culture could contribute to its broader community and downtown revitalization efforts. Martinsville was at an important moment of change, with renewed activity in Uptown, growing interest in community events and public spaces, and the re-establishment of the City’s Arts & Culture Committee. The planning process focused on understanding the community’s existing cultural assets and identifying ways to build on them over the next decade.

The process brought together perspectives from residents, artists, educators, business owners, civic leaders, students, and community organizations. Engagement included stakeholder interviews, a community survey, and pop-up activities throughout the community. These conversations helped us understand both the strengths already present in Martinsville and the challenges facing its creative community, including the need for greater visibility, coordination, and support.

The resulting Plan outlines recommendations for public art, cultural programming, partnerships, artist support, creative branding, and arts-based economic development. It also identifies strategies to strengthen the City’s capacity to support arts and culture over time, including clearer processes, stronger partnerships, funding opportunities, and implementation tools. The recommendations were designed to build on Martinsville’s existing cultural assets while responding to the priorities and opportunities identified through the planning process.
